Having promised helen to dissuade others from using Ouija boards the narrator was reluctant to be Laura's partner during the ouija board party. So he felt embarrassed! He had promised Helen the ghost to stop his wife from buying ouija boards and giving a party to her friends who always disturbed the ghosts by playing it.
