The question has been asked from the poem \bf{Snake} of \bf{D.H. \: Lawrence}

The poet was regretful after following his voice of education. His education asked him to kill the snake because according to it the snake may be termed as harmful as it is poisonous. So, the poet threw a log of wood at snake. But as the snake was a quiet one , he didn't prove to be harmful. Instead, he was there to quench his thirst.

The poet felt regret as he unnecessarily threw a log of wood at snake. This might have killed an innocent creature.
