Why does the poet suggest to hide all your cookies ?

The poem highlights the carelessness of the poet when he talks about how he accidently dropped the cookies on the floor. The poet thought that it was best to eat each one of the cookies because he felt the Santa was overweight and needed to check his weight. The poet was not doing everything accidently.
