The poet uses the expression, dark ,deep, darkest because, it was winter season and especially on winter season, the days are shorter while the nights are longer . Hence, it is also considered the dark season and on 22nd December is the darkest night in the whole YEAR...So for the significance of the observation he felt, he used such expressions...
