The spider calls the fly 'witty' because he wanted to eat the fly. By telling such good words he wanted to make the fly feel at ease and take him to his web. Initialy the fly didn't fell in the flattering words of the spider. But at last the spider succeded in convincing the fly that he is good and really wanted to invite the fly to his house. So the spider praised the fly in many ways to make him his food.
