When sunlight falls on the atmosphere, the blue light is scattered out by these atmospheric particles. The light that reaches the surface of the Earth is predominantly red. Therefore, sun and its surrounding appears reddish, when the less scattered red light reaches our eyes.

during the sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger portion of the atmosphere bcz they're very close to the horizon.. therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away.. most of the red light enters our eyes which is the less scattered hence, I the sun and the sky appears red
