The temperature of any substance remain constant during the change of statebecause the heat energy supplied is used up in changing the stateof matter and also this heat is used for breaking of several bonds or attractive forces. This heat, which does not raise thetemperature of the body, is called Laten heat.

During the conversion of physical state, some amount of heat is absorbed by the molecules of the substance to break the strong intermolecular attractions between the particles of the substance. The heat is taken by the body but the temperature remains constant due to this absorption of heat. This absorbed heat is know as the latent heat.
