Why does toothpaste contain a base?please I want an answer now.

toothpaste contains base because toothpaste is used for cleaning out teeth..
we eat food so it gets acidic and stick to our teeth..so toothpaste contain base to react with the acids present in teeth to form salt and water..

after having food,many food particles struck on the teeth called plaque.bacteria start germinating in the plaque.they release acids which in turn from cavities on the teeth.to prevent this tooth paste contains bases,so that acid would be neutralized and prevent from tooth decay
