When Douglas was 4 years old and his father took him to the beach in California, he was knocked down by the waves while standing in the surf. Douglas was buried in water, his breath was gone and he was frightened. Thanks to this experience, there was always a terror in his heart at the overpowering force of the waves and a hatred of the idea of getting into water.
