Wood floats on water because it is light and light things can float and the stone sinks because it is heavy. So it depends on the density of the materials if it is light it will float and will sink if it is heavy.

Wood floatsink... water because it is lighter in density than water whereas Stone sinks as it is much heavier than the density of water...As lighter matter floats on water but heavier things sink
