In saturated compounds two atoms are bonded by the sigma bond .sigma bond is formed at the internuclear axis in between the  two bonded atom is very strong. Hence it is not a favorable process to break that bond and undergo addition reaction.

On the other hand unsaturated compounds undergo addition reactions because of the presence of pi bond.

The electron charge cloud of the pi bond is placed above and below the plane of the bonding atom. This result in the easy availability of the electrons in the unsaturated compounds.

Thus pi electrons provide a better site for the attacking species.
