Red light has the longest wavelength in the visible light spectrum which is scattered the least due to this phenomenon sun appears red in colour during sunrise and sunset.
It does not happen during the day time when sun is directly overhead because at that time sunlight has to travel the least distance.
At sunrise and sunset when sun is in the east and west respectively the sunlight has to travel the maximum distance.
