why early man settle near the river​

because of agriculture and other uses of water was easy from near the river

When the rivers flow from high mountains they carry with them the eroded soil which eventually settles at the river banks when they flow through the plains. This eroded soil is extremely fertile for agriculture and thus these areas are highly populated compared to hill stations where the soil is not apt for agriculture because of its infertility
