Why equal mass of different substances does not have same volume ?

Equal masses of different substance have equal volume.

for example - the mass of an iron is much more than the mass of equal volume of wood.

this is bcoz the particles of an iron are much more closely packed than those of the wood . to other words iron is denser than wood
