Evaporation is called as a surface phenomenon because it occurs on the surface and it is directly proportional to the surface area .
As the surface area is more evaporation occurs faster and if the surface area is less evaporation occurs less.
Example :- Clothes dry faster when we spread them by increasing the surface area.

HEYA!!!
HERE IS YOUR ANSWER,
⇔ Well the reason behind calling evaporation as surface phenomenon is :
→ Molecules of water present on the surface of liquid are bonded weakly as compared to inner molecules.
→ When temperature increases hydrogen bonding between water molecules breaks.
→ The surface atoms or molecules gains energy from surroundings and overcome the attractions of other molecules and gets vaporized.
⇔ EXAMPLE :
→ When a glass of water is kept under the sun, the surface of liquid having less bonding of molecules breaks down the bonds due to high temperature and thus the molecules get vaporized.

THANK YOU. ^_^
