Hiccups are bursts of inspiratory (breathing in) activity. The muscles weuse when we take in a breath are the intercostal muscles situated between the ribs, and the diaphragm - a sheet of muscle below the lungs. ... This will cause the diaphragm to contract, as itdoes when we breathe in.

we say that we not ralk while having food thus is because food can go into windpipe. we get hiccuos to take this food out of windpipe. if food remains in foodpipe this can lead to death.
