exine should be hard because it protects pollen grain (by which pollen grain develops normally) from severe conditions. It is the outermost layer made up of sporopollenin which protects pollen grain from harsh environmental conditions.
On a spore or pollen grain, a thin-walled area through which the germ tube or pollen tube emerges on germination. The thin or absent exine at the germ pore helps in the identification of some pollen grains.
