Falling on a sponge mattress gives bounce to you and you won't get any pain whereas on bare land it won't bounce you again and gives you pain.

Their is a elasticity in spongy mattress which absorbs the force and bring it downwards due to which you didn't experience any type of pain. Falling on a bare land is tough by the force you fell down the same amount of force is transferred to you by the land in addition with gravitational force due to which falling on spongy mattress is safer than falling on bare land..
