Why fighter jets release magnesium strips to get rid of missile attack?

Many Missiles work on principle of heat released by engines of fighter jets.

So, When magnesium strips are released in air then they burn into air Hence Missile system gets confused where to attack as heat released by magnesium and fighter jet are almost of same temperature. By using this technique Fighter jets can dodge the incoming missiles .
