Franz was expected to learn the rule of Participles for the school that day by M.Hamel. Moreover, Franz was getting Late for school as he was watching the prussian soldiers march and also saw the bustle at the bulletin board. When he was going to the school he was afraid that M.Hamel will scold him for not preparing the homework given to them.

Franz was late to the school. He was expected to have learnt well the lesson on participles. All children were expected have studied and prepared well before that morning as the teacher Mr Hamel would ask questions on participles. He did not prepare at all. So he was afraid of the shame , in case he was unable to answer. He was afraid that Mr Hamel would scold him , when he would not be able to answer questions. He was also afraid because he was late to the school.
