why galvanometer when connected in series with a capacitor show a momentary deflection?

Galvanometer is a electromechanical instrument used to detect and measure electric current.

So in your case, the deflection is momentary because the capacitor draws some current during charging and during discharging itsources current. Hence in both case current is changed which is detected by galvanometer and it deflects.
