Majority of the buildings in India are RC framed buildings, comprising of RC slabs, beams and columns. This skeletal structural frame is primarily responsible for taking loads and its components are referred to as structural members. Masonry in-fill walls are non-structural members. They do not resist any load and are meant only to make the building functional.
Hence, if one is constructing such a building type, it is necessary to first construct a skeletal structure that can take up the loads of masonry in-fill walls and other non-structural elements of the building.
Nowadays, the trend is to construct masonry walls simultaneously with casting of columns. It has been recommended that this technique improves the earthquake-resistance of the building by providing more confinement. Hence, the codes are pushing this method of construction in practice.
