Answer:
First of all, we need to know that molecules expand on heating and contract in cold.
So, gaps are left between successive rails on railway tracks to provide space for the iron metal railway tracks to expand and contract according to different seasons.
For example: The iron metal railways tracks:-
1) contract in winters and
2) expand in summers
If, incase the gaps are not left in between the tracks; serious train accidents may happen due to derailing.
*derailing means causing a train to leave its tracks accidentally.

This is because during summer as the rails are made of metal it expands in summer and if no space is left than the train will get off the track and in winter it will contract so the space is left so the train will not get off
