It is because the Godavari River is one of the largest and biggest Peninsular Rivers similar to the largest Himalayan. It is similar to the Ganga river in the south hence it is known as Dakshin Ganga.

as it is longer river in the deacen plateau and it flows from the Himalaya regions and from there to decean region and mixes in bay of Bengal so it is also holy river...which is treated as one of the God like the ganaga river soo it is know as dakshin ganga
