Gold and silver are very less reactive and do not corrode easily! To dissolve them, only a solution called Aqua Regia (Hydrochloric acid 'HCl' and Nitric Acid 'HNO3' in 1:3 ratio) is used. Also they don't oxidize(rust) for a long time. They may tarnish but don't not permanantly. Hence they are used!
