why grassland and forest converted into agriculture

As population grew, so did the demands for food. But, food requirements could not met just by using the land that was being cultivated. Agricultural output had to  be increased so as to fill every hungry stomach. For that, people needed more land. That is why they converted the grassland and forests, which was considered unproductive, into agricultural land.
