The guard cells regulate the opening and closing of stomata pores as it is the outerpart of the stomata. It is because the exchange of gases occur only in the day, so the stomata remains wide open during the day, while during the night the stomata are closed as there is no exchange of gases.

The opening and closing of the pore is a function of the guard cells. The guard cells swell when water flows into them, causing the stomatal pore to open. Simillarly the pore closes if the guard cells shrink
