Why had englishmen demand a clamp down on the 'vernacular press'in the 19th century?

The Englishmen decided to shut down vernacular and local press offices and newspapers because they were constantly spreading secular ideas of independence and freedom through articles and magazines. Because newspaper was the only mass media communication tool at that time all the people used to read the news in it. Initially, this was overlooked by the British but as time started to change more people became aware of the atrocities performed  by the Englishmen. Newspapers,press,magazine and even poems and stories used to openly critisice the British officials. This led to the decrease in the power of the British because slowly the Indians realized their importance and started forming alliances for independence. Hence, to reduce possibilities of reduction in power the British decided to shut down the press.
