Why had Europeans called Africa a dark continent

European's called Africa as black continent because the people in Africa are dark in colour and another reason is they had very little knowledge about the and it looked mysterious to them .Another reason was no one there were Christians until Europeans started to spread Christianity,so they thought that "the light of the JESUS CHRIST didn't reach them till they came"and therefore they called Africa as "dark continent" .
