M. Hamel wore his finest attire because he wore that on speacial days.. moreover it was the last lecture which he was imparting to his students on that day.. so he preferred to wear that green coat.
The old men were sitting at the back benches because they realized that they did not take the advantage of such a good teacher since last many years... now they had come to collect some knowledge about french and to learn some new words

Bcz it was the last day of M.hamel and also thier last lesson of French bcz of his last day for school he dressed up in good way . And villagers sitting on last benches came to gave a respect or tribute to m.hamel for his 40 yrs of service towards school...I hope it will help u I have written this question in my own language . understand it.
