This was because some type of clothes could not be supplied by machines. For eg saris with intricate border and clothes with traditional woven patterns.Machines could not produce them. These had wide demand not only between rich but also between middle class. In late 19 th century sholapur and madura grew as an important centre of weaving.Gandhiji urged people to use hand spun and hand woven clothes.
