Rapid growth of urban areas have created environmental problems and burden of resources.
Explanation:
- More than half of the world population now lives in urban areas due to the increase in the standards of living and employment opportunities. This shows a process of urbanization and transformation of rural to urban areas.
- The Indian census defined metropolitan areas as those that have large populations, a high degree of social and economic integrations.
- The problems that have emerged from this are those of environmental issues such as sewage, industrial waste disposal, and air and sound pollution.
- Depletion of groundwater resources and poor quality of air is seen to rise due to the overpopulation and along with oth this the case of development of heat island has also been reported in metropolitan cities.
