Indirect/Reported speech refers to speech being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: He said,"I have a function to attend today." (Direct)

He said that he had a function to attend that day. (Indirect/Reported)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense form. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'will' changes to would', 'you' changes to 'I' and many other words will have to be made.

"Why have not you been here for such a long time?" said Natalya to Lomov. (Direct)

Natalya asked Lomov why he hadn't been there for such a long time. (Indirect/Reported)

Hope it helps :)
