The first modern textile mill was established in Mumbai in 1854. Location of the Gujarat port, humid Coastal climate, development of chemical industry, availability of capital and easy to import of machinery were some of the advantages. Raw cotton was imported from other states. Later the dispersal of cotton textile industry started as a result of which cotton mills were established at Ahmedabad in the heart of the cotton growing belt. At Ahmedabad the level land as well as capital was available. Ahmedabad had no problems of strikes and high wages and therefore it came to be referred as the ‘Manchester of India’( the largest textile centre of India).

The first textile mill was established, in Mumbai. The cotton mills were first confined to Maharastra and Gujarat as these were cotton growing belts. These mills were localised due to availability of raw cotton, labour, transport and markets in these areas. Now these cotton mills have moved to Ahmedabad due to following reasons:
The cost of land in Mumbai is very high and there is lack of space.
No one now opens cotton factories due to high costs and congestion.
Cost of cloth produced in Ahmedabad is cheaper and there are local markets for it.
