Because they are being formed by the collision of two tectonic plates, with the "crumpling" of the plates forming the mountains like the "wrinkles" in bent metal when two cars hit. They are not the result of magma from volcanoes erupting and pushing up the peaks or from weathering of softer material exposing harder material. This also explains the "younger" part, since they show little weathering or erosion, they have not been there as long as say the Appalachians that show rounding and weathering.
