Both doesn't resemblance in characters, but in few Because both has a single election in their outer most shell( valence shell) and has a strong monovalent reducing property (transfer of his atom that can participate in forming chemical bonds)

Hydrogen has all the properties of an alkali metal just like potassium, sodium and so on (only about 2 or 3 exceptions because it is a gas) that is why it is placed and has a resemblance with alkali metals.
