Modern periodic table is based upon the atomic no and electronic configuration of the elements. According to afbou principle electronic configuration of hydrogen is H = (1) 1s1 Since hydrogen has configuration is similar as that of 1st group metals therefore it is placed in group 1st of the periodic table. Although it also resembles the properties of 17th group elements but  since it has 1 electron in its outermost shell thus it is placed seperately in the 1st group.   Hope this will hel  you. ANSWER :

Hydrogen is placed in group I of the modern periodic table due to following reasons:-

(1) It shows outer electronic configuration similar to group I elements (i.e.1s1).

(2) It readily looses its electron to form H+ ion which resembles the electropositive character of group I elements.

(3) It shows +1 oxidation state like alkali i.e. group Ielements.

(4) Hydrogen also acts as a strong reducing agent like alkali metals and also forms binary compounds with electronegative elements which resembles the group I elements.
