given ABCD is a square
in a square four sides are equal
AB=BC=CD=DA

NOW
AB= BC
square both sides
(AB)² = (BC)²

Actually distance between two points A(x1,y1) and B(x2,y2)

AB=√(x2-x1)²+(y2-y1)²
doing square both sides
(AB)² = (x2-x1)²+(y2-y1)²

doing calculations without square root is easy that is the main reason
