why in ch- AP an is sometimes written as L ?

well......
that is beacuse in some question we have to use n as another term expect no. of terms 
for ex ;-
Sn = n/2 [ a + L ]

so here n refers to the term till which we want the sum so if we use an so instead of last term we will be writing the term we have to find sum till .....

it looks complicated but if u read it 2-3 times u will understand
