Why in gold silver and copper is used exvept to make it hard

In India the purest form of gold i.e. 24 carat is never used as it is not possible to mould it into an ornament as it is very soft, so 22 carat gold with 2 carat silver or copper is used in gold ornaments to make it stronger and stable.
