The babies or twins whose bodies are joined are called siamese babies or conjoined twins. There are two theories, one is when the single zygote fertilised by two sperms does not separate completely. The most widely accepted theory for development of conjoined twins is the fusion. According to this theory, a fertilized egg completely separates, but stem cells of one foetus/twin find the similar cells on the other foetus/twin and divide rapidly. This results in the fusion of the twins together. These babies/twins share common placenta, amniotic sac in the mother womb. the formation of conjoined twins is a random event and may or may not involve genetics or change in DNA. But the babies with extra limbs or fingers may be due to change in one or few genes.
