Humans respire through the lungs by a process called as Pulmonary respiration. This process includes mechanisms like - the breathing movement and the exchange of gases in the lungs, followed by the transportation of these gases through the blood and exchange of gases by the tissues. Respiration mainly occurs in the thoracic cavity which is an airtight chamber, that is enclosed laterally by the ribs and posteriorly by the diaphragm.

In females, the
diaphragm will not participate and play an important role in the process of inspiration. This is so as to avoid or prevent any kind of injury that may occur to the fetus in the female uterus. Therefore, the ribs will play an important role in the females, whereas, in males, the inspiration takes place at the diaphragm.
