In 1947, when Indian republic was newly formed, the world was dividing itself between 2 camps, capitalist USA and communist USSR. Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, who was a socialist at heart, decided not to join either of the blocs and instead stay non-aligned. India had gained freedom after a long struggle for independence and thus did not want to lose this autonomy and not to be under any superpower after finally getting independence. Focus of the government at that time was India's economic growth which could only be achieved by peace and by not getting into another war. Also, neither capitalism nor communism was part of India's ideology. Indian government of the time saw itself as peace bridge between the 2 fighting power blocs. Along with other like minded countries, India formed the third bloc that was made of countries who decided not to join either of the superpowers and thus started non-alignment movement. Prime Minister Nehru used this term for the first time in UN Assembly and decided to focus on handling the social and economic problems of newly formed republic.
