India has mountain to the north which has an average height of 6000 metres. India also has a vast coastal area where the maximum elevation is about 30 metres that act as a moderating factor. the Himalayas prevent the cold wind from Central Asia from entering the subcontinent. it is because of these mountains that the subcontinent experiences comparatively milder winters as compared to Central Asia.
