1)Mostly big water bodies are named after the biggest country which are neartest to them. EG-South China Sea
2)Many navigators and sea traders wanted to travel to India they were interested in the Indian Route, in order to reach India. When they finally discovered the route it began to be called as the "Indian ocean"
3)India has the longest coastline in the region adding to its clout, no other country in the Indian ocean indeed has that long a coastline.
