The inspiration in a cockroach is direct, that is, the atmospheric air directly comes into contact with various organs of the body and therefore, the blood transport and the medium of the blood is not used for an active process like respiration. The cockroaches have respiratory system which are not labyrinthine to the systemic working with regards to a human.
Spiracles are used to keep the dust particles, parasites and water from entering the tracheoles of the cockroach. There are ten pairs of slit-like openings present in the spiracles which are situated on the either side of the body wall. The mechanism of inspiration and expiration are the same, oxygen is diffused into the tissue cells and carbon dioxide are expelled out through a thin cuticle layer from the body wall.
A considerable amount of carbon dioxide that is dissolved though in the haemolymph (type of blood present in the cockroach) is due to the fact that the cuticle layer of the cockroach is very much permeable to carbon dioxide and not to the elementary oxygen, because of which it passes out through the mode of diffusion through the cuticle.

Inspiration of cockroach is said to be a passive process while it is an active process in man because in cockroaches, the air which is inhaled is directly came in contact with the various body organ. But in case of humans it is not like that. In humans from the heart indirectly the oxygen reaches to the various parts of the human body. Hence it is said so.
