in ionic compounds there is a strong intermolecular force of attraction and a stong chemical bond between the molecules and as such they remain tightly attached and are in the solid state . in covalent compounds the bond is weaker and therefore the intermolecular force of attraction is weaker and they are in either the solid or liquid state.
