Ionic crystals are hard due to strong electrostatic forces between them. They are brittle because ionic bond is non-directional.

Because they have high force of attraction between them that's y they r hard and brittle because the electrons present there does not move in a particular direction, they move here and there and collide with each other and so they r broken down easily.
