A military coup took place on that day and democratically elected President was asked to resign. When he refused, he was killed and then the leader Augusto Pinochet became the President for around next 17 years, without any elections.

The 11 September 1973 is considered to be the big day in the history of Chile as on this very day the democratic elected socialist government under Salvador Allende was overthrown by coup d'état.
As there was a socialist government, the United States CIA backed the military coup which ruled Chile for next 13 years.
