Commercially, hydrogen peroxide is prepared by auto-oxidation of 2-ethylanthraquinol. It involves alternate oxidation and reduction of 2-ethylanthraquinol.
It involves alternate oxidation and reduction of 2-ethylanthraquinol. First, air is passed through a mixture of 2-ethylanthraquinol mixture. It yields 2-ethylanthraquinone and hydrogen peroxide. The product, 2-ethylanthraquinone, is then reduced. For this, hydrogen under a pressure of 1 to 3 atmospheres at 4oC is passed over 2-ethylanthraquinone. This gives back 2-ethylanthraquinol – the reactant. This reaction gives a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide. It is then extracted with water, and the solution of the required concentration is prepared
